Nasdaq 100 dropped 1.90% as new Fed leadership signals balance sheet tightening. Earnings beat heavily on the day, but sector rotation away from tech dominated.

The market took a cautious step back on Tuesday as the Federal Reserve's transition to Chair Kevin Warsh began in earnest, with tech equities bearing the brunt of institutional repositioning. The Nasdaq 100 fell 1.90%, while the S&P 500 declined 0.60% and the Dow Jones eked out a modest +0.58% gain—a rare divergence that underscores a dramatic rotation away from growth and into value.

The Tech Reckoning

Technology stocks struggled significantly, shedding 2.08% sector-wide as investors digested Warsh's mandate to shrink the Federal Reserve's balance sheet. This hawkish signal, combined with calls for stricter inflation-fighting measures aligned with ECB policy, spooked growth investors who have benefited from accommodative monetary conditions. The MSFT abandoned a $3B+ cloud infrastructure lease with Oracle over security and compliance concerns, a headline that also weighed on cloud-adjacent names and reinforced fears of capital discipline returning to tech spending.

Bright Spots Amid Turbulence

Communication Services and select industrials provided rare bright spots. LION surged 13.8% and MGNI climbed 10.7%, both in Communication Services, while AADX led Industrials with an 11.9% gain. Basic Materials also outperformed, with SSRM and GMTL gaining 10.0% and 8.1% respectively. This suggests investors are rotating into sectors less sensitive to interest rate regime change—a classic defensive posture when policy tightens.

Earnings Paint a Mixed Picture

While headline earnings delivered outsized beats, the story is nuanced. JRSH posted a stunning +1,300% EPS beat with +19% revenue growth, and HITI achieved +150% EPS growth, but these are small-cap outliers. More representatively, RFIL beat EPS by 56% and ANDG by 24%, signaling that companies are managing expectations and beating modestly. The real concern: revenue beats are anemic. Only JRSH posted double-digit revenue gains; most others delivered single-digit or flat topline results. This suggests earnings resilience stems from cost-cutting rather than demand strength.

A Sectoral Divergence Worth Watching

Energy tumbled 1.57%, Consumer Defensive fell 0.53%, and Healthcare dropped 0.25%—an unusual combination that hints at profit-taking across the board. Meanwhile, Utilities, Real Estate, and Financial Services held near flat, a pattern consistent with money rotating into boring, yield-bearing assets ahead of a more restrictive Fed.

Conversely, the micro-cap rout deserves attention: CIIT plunged 69.6%, VRXA dropped 55.5%, and SNWV fell 42.0%—classic signs of speculative excess unwinding in small-cap names that benefited from retail enthusiasm earlier in the year.

Looking Ahead

Chair Warsh's first days will be closely watched for signal clarity. If the Fed accelerates balance sheet reduction or hints at extended rate restrictiveness, expect tech to remain under pressure. However, equities with converging bullish signals—MDT and AVGO both show "Very Attractive" ratings with multiple confirmations—may offer relative safety for investors seeking growth without the interest-rate sensitivity that crushed Nasdaq 100 today.

Crypto held firm, with BTC near $67,210, suggesting some risk-on sentiment persists. Tomorrow's Fed commentary will be decisive.
