Tech Surges as Geopolitical Risk Fades; Small Caps Outpace

Markets rallied broadly on easing Iran tensions, with Nasdaq 100 up 1.66% and Russell 2000 jumping 1.28%. Tech stocks led gains, while earnings beats from HELE and LEVI provided fundamental support.

U.S. equities posted a solid session Thursday as geopolitical risk retreated and investors rotated into growth assets. The S&P 500 gained 0.85% to close at $751.71, while the Nasdaq 100 outperformed with a 1.66% climb to $723.28. Small-cap strength was particularly notable, with the Russell 2000 advancing 1.28% to $297.24—a sign that risk appetite extended beyond mega-cap tech.

The catalyst was clear: easing tensions between the U.S. and Iran removed a war premium that had weighed on equities and energy markets earlier in the week. This de-risking unlocked demand for cyclicals and beaten-down sectors, though it also explained why energy declined 1.15% as crude pressure eased.

Technology led the charge, gaining 2.91%, driven by outsized moves in smaller names. LASR rocketed 27.3% higher—the day's biggest gainer—while BTDR and AEHR both surged past 12%. These weren't household names, but the breadth of strength across the tech ecosystem suggested institutional repositioning, not retail speculation. A record-size trade in the QQQ ETF reported earlier signaled smart money building bullish positions ahead of a potential tech rally.

Healthcare also participated, with BBIO and TXG each climbing 15%+, though gains here appeared more stock-specific than sector-wide, with healthcare overall up a modest 1.48%. Financial services lagged relative performance, gaining only 0.54%, suggesting investors favored growth over value rotations.

On the earnings front, HELE delivered a jaw-dropping beat: EPS surged 750% above expectations while revenue beat by 7%. While such outsized EPS beats often reflect low prior-year comparisons, the combination with solid top-line performance signals operational improvement. LEVI posted more measured but credible results—EPS beat of 17% paired with a 3% revenue beat—suggesting apparel demand remains resilient. AZZ chimed in with a 9% EPS beat and 3% revenue beat, adding to the narrative.

The earnings tape is gradually shifting from "better than feared" to "actually improving." That's meaningful. It justifies some of the valuation expansion we've seen in growth stocks this year.

What merits attention for active investors: Five stocks flashed multiple bullish technical and fundamental signals. CMC and AYI showed three converging signals each, classified as "Very Attractive." FIVE, MKC, and TSM each displayed two bullish signals. While technical convergence isn't a standalone buy signal, pairing it with today's risk-on environment makes these names worth deeper scrutiny.

One cautionary note: the microcap biotech rally—JLHL up 318%, VRAX up 100%—has the fingerprints of a short squeeze or undisclosed catalyst rather than fundamental revaluation. That territory requires extreme caution.

Looking ahead, the question is whether today's geopolitical relief sustains or proves transitory. Fed task force announcements—including members like Marc Andreessen and Doug McMillon—signal the central bank is preparing for a potential operational review, though that's a longer-term story. Watch for any escalation in the Iran situation, which could quickly reverse today's tailwinds.
